“If I could use just one word to describe the path of Living Dao, I would say ‘trust’!” (Master Shangshi).

Why trust? We want to enter this deep realm of our being, which is connected with the Dao, with the all-embracing existence. This realm, however, lies outside of our ego structures, outside our personal borders. It lies completely outside of our experiences, our concepts and any of our ideas. It is impossible to reach this through practice. We can only experience it in our heart and enter it through our trust.

Trust is not the same as faith or positive thinking. If you think along the lines of: ‘I’m not sure yet if the Dao even exists, but what the heck, I’ll believe in it for now, because at the moment I have no other choice…’ That would be faith and won’t achieve anything!

We do it the other way round: we may not yet understand what the Dao is, but we live as if we have already grasped it: We’re not worried. We don’t ponder. We’re not afraid. With our trust, we take one step at a time, and we will see that we find ground under our feet every time. And although we couldn’t see anything at first, as time goes by, we will have more and more proof that the Dao actually exists.
